This meditation is derived from the teachings of the tenth-century Sufi master Abd Al-Jabbar. Instead of speaking to his disciples in a comprehensible language, Jabbar simply uttered nonsense words in reply to their questions. He did this to teach that all words and questions are nothing but gibberish of the mind. Inspired by him, Osho created a meditation called Gibberish. This is an hour-long meditation and is practiced in three stages. This meditation can be done alone or in a group. You can do it in silence, to any music you like, or with a pre-recorded CD
.
Stage 1:
Gibberish–
30 minutes
Sit or stand, and with eyes closed begin speaking nonsense words. Do not speak a language or use words that you know. In gibberish, express whatever thoughts and emotions might arise. As you do the gibberish, you can cry, shout, sing, or just mumble. Allow your body to do whatever it wants: punch, kick, jump, lie down, pace, or whatever it feels like doing. Don’t be idle or silent for even a moment. Go completely crazy. Allow yourself to be completely free in your expression. Throughout the process, witness whatever comes to the surface without getting identified with anything.
Stage 2: Silent Witnessing – 15 minutes
Sit silently and be absolutely still. Bring your awareness into your center and simply observe your inner climate. Witness whatever is happening inside and outside. Observe your thoughts, emotions, and the energy movement inside your body. Don’t judge or try to figure out what is happening. Simply observe. Don’t let your focus wander from your breath. If it wanders, bring it back and continue watching your breath. Center your awareness in the gaps between the incoming and outgoing breaths.
Stage 3: Let-Go – 15 minutes
Lie down and relax. The gong will indicate the end of the meditation.
You can practice this meditation alone or in a group.
